This is the evaluation for you if you desire optimal vibrant health as you age. Current mainstream media would have us believe that as we age we must succumb to inevitable loss of energy, loss of vitality, and disability. However the truth is that it is possible to feel better as you age and I have seen this proven time and time again in my practice. Patient's will often return and say such things as, “I have not had this much energy since before having children” or “my friends and family are asking what I am doing.”
I have gone through the traditional medical training and I can tell you first hand that nutrition and wellness were not a priority. Some medical schools have less than 4 hours total of nutritional education. The primary focus of medical education is spent on the pathophysiology of disease, how to make the diagnosis, and what drugs and treatments to recommend for each diagnosis. It is not a surprise that an annual physical is focused on immunizations, screening recommendations for cancer and osteoporosis, and basic labs with little time left for detailed lifestyle advice. While there is a definitely a need for some of these preventative services, I can tell you that being up to date on your screenings, and having a “normal cholesterol” does not equate to optimal health. In fact 50% of people presenting with a heart attack have normal cholesterol. And sadly enough, of the 30% who die from a heart attack, their first symptom of heart disease was death. More can be done to identify those at risk.
Similarly, more can be done to prevent heart disease than prescribing statin drugs. As reported by Dr. Mark Hyman in his weekly house call, "In the journal Lancet in 2004 they followed 30,000 people and they found that changing lifestyle could prevent at least 90 percent of all heart disease! That’s huge! This study is among many others in the large database of evidence that documents how lifestyle interventions are far more effective in reducing cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and deaths from all causes than almost any other medical intervention. Lifestyle change not only reduces risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar and cholesterol, but changing our lifestyle, changes the fundamental root causes or the biological mechanisms that lead to disease. Changing your lifestyle can change your gene expression which modulates inflammation, free radicals, and oxidative stress. These are the real causes of most disease. The good news is that fixing the problem at its root cause, results in tremendous benefits for so many chronic diseases, but also in disease prevention and optimal health."
